Introducing the Adventist Biblical Research Institute (BRI)

Each theological article on Adventist.org is reviewed by a panel of subject-matter experts for theological accuracy and alignment with the values and practices of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. This service is provided by the Biblical Research Institute (BRI).

BRI is a scholarly organization within the Seventh-day Adventist Church that focuses on research and education, serving the world church as a resource for biblical interpretation and application. It exists to maintain and continually pursue theological understanding, making sure the Bible is the doctrinal benchmark for Adventist teachings, operations, and ministries.

The General Conference Committee established BRI in 1975, and its offices are located at the General Conference World Headquarters of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Silver Spring, MD.

BRI’s mission is to:

  • Advance the study, understanding, and practice of Christian theology and continually explore further biblical truth
  • Provide theological expertise and resources for the leadership of the General Conference and the world church
  • Identify and study areas of doctrinal and theological concern, all while encouraging commitment to the core truths of Scripture
  • Encourage and facilitate healthy dialogue within the Seventh-day Adventist theological community1

The resident scholars that lead BRI have advanced degrees in the areas of theology, history, biblical studies, and other related fields. Additionally, they all have extensive experience in researching and teaching the Bible and Adventist theology, and many are also ordained ministers.
